The Church of Saint Catherine<\/h2>\n
It is one of the early parishes<\/strong> of the city of Seville, originally from the 14th century, initially Gothic Mudejar<\/strong> But it underwent significant transformations in the 16th and 18th centuries, its period of greatest splendor, when the Baroque Sacramental Chapel was built, which has been completed with the reforms<\/strong> of the 20th and 21st centuries.<\/p>\n
In recent years it has been closed due to the latest renovation, completed in 2018.<\/p>\n
It is a parish and shares its headquarters with the\u00a0 Church of San Rom\u00e1n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Saint Catherine<\/h2>\n
Dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria<\/strong>,Saint, Roman, 4th century, virgin queen and martyr, invoked to avoid sudden death, Saint Helper, her cult spread very soon throughout Europe in the 12th century, at the hands of the crusaders, being patron saint of barbers and of the Dominican order.<\/p>\n
She is depicted with a crown, a palm of martyrdom, a wheel, and a sword.<\/p>\n

Brotherhoods and Devotions<\/h2>\n
Is headquarters<\/strong> The Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament of the Immaculate Conception, the Holy Souls in Purgatory, Saint Sebastian, the Nazarenes of Christ of the Exaltation (the moment when Christ, already crucified, is raised on Calvary), Our Lady of Sorrows, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria organize a Eucharistic procession in May and a penitential procession on Holy Thursday.<\/p>\n

Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mount Carmel<\/strong>, Blessed Marcelo Sp\u00ednola, Mary Most Holy of the Rosary and Saint Dominic of Guzman, are carried in procession in June and October.<\/p>\n
This church is reference in Seville for the worship of Saint Lucy<\/strong>, whose brotherhood resides and takes it out in procession in September.<\/p>\n

What to see at the Church of Saint Catherine<\/h2>\n
Architecture<\/h4>\n
In this fabulous church in the northern historic center of Seville, its most striking feature is beautiful architecture<\/strong>, It is an 11th-century Gothic-Mud\u00e9jar style temple. Furthermore, this place was awarded as National monument<\/strong> since 1912 and Cultural Heritage Site<\/strong> since 1985.<\/p>\n
Its structure is based on even older remains, Arab, Roman,\u2026 something we will see in its crypt<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Artistic works<\/h4>\n
Numerous altars dedicated to important saints in the city of Seville and works of great importance in Sevillian religious imagery such as the Christ of the Exaltation<\/em>, by Pedro Rold\u00e1n. <\/strong>This image maker and sculptor was one of the most important of the Spanish Baroque and father of Luisa la Roldana.<\/p>\n

There is a small but spectacular 17th-century oil painting. Juan de Roelas<\/strong> which represents the Child Jesus, Savior of the World as the Child of the Tabernacle<\/em><\/strong>, because it closes the door of the Tabernacle.<\/p>\n

Above the tabernacle appears the image of Our Lady of the Rosary<\/strong> by Ruiz Gij\u00f3n, whose photograph is found above in the text, in the section Brotherhoods and devotions<\/em>. This chapel belongs exclusively to the Brotherhood and has its own crypt.<\/p>\n
Another jewel, small but significant and of high quality, is the embroidery and oil painting of the Gala Banner of the Brotherhood of the Virgin of the Rosary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sacramental Chapel<\/h4>\n
The great work that What stands out and contrasts with the rest of the temple is its Sacramental Chapel<\/strong> which crowns the Gospel nave. Entering this chapel is like stepping into another world. It's a complete surprise that the Church of Saint Catherine has in store for us at the end.<\/p>\n
Decorated in the purest Churrigueresque Baroque style<\/strong> by the Sevillian architect\u00a0Leonardo de Figueroa<\/strong>, in which he also participates Vicente Alan\u00eds.<\/strong><\/p>\n
This spectacular jewel<\/strong> It appears enclosed in this space, completely opposite to the rest of the temple, due to its profuse decoration that leaves no room for the imagination.<\/p>\n

They highlight their lantern dome<\/strong>, its plasterwork, its mural paintings and its paneling<\/strong> polychrome wooden pieces that delight lovers of this artistic style.<\/p>\n
In its baroque altarpiece we will see a magnificent work by the 16th-century Flemish painter based in Seville, Pedro de Campa\u00f1a<\/strong>, one of the greats of the Sevillian Renaissance, his Christ bound to the column and tears of Saint Peter<\/em>. <\/strong>This is the highest quality work in the Church of Saint Catherine.<\/p>\n
